’Twas a month before Christmas, and all through the house
The aroma of baked goods
Got the attention of my spouse.
The date had been chosen and was fast drawing near
It’s been said our Holiday Brunch
Is the party of the year.
The menu was curated, shopping list drawn up
I’m forgetting something, I know I am
For sure it will turn up.
“How many people are coming?,” asked hubby, his fingers were sticky
It’s usually a houseful,
Enough seating might be tricky
“Put the danish down; we’ve not a moment to spare.
There’s so much to do
And I still need something to wear.
Decorations in boxes, were strewn everywhere
“I just tripped,” he complained
Did I hear a soft swear?
The tree’s up by the fireplace, its lights twinkle and glow
Oops, is that a string out?
Hubby can fix that, you know.
Kitchen counters are covered, and baking pans abound
There’s only one question,
Cut cookies into squares or rounds?
I’ll consult Martha and Ina, I’m sure they would know
I own all their cookbooks,
And have watched every show.
Three days and counting, still so much to do
The list seems longer,
Well, I could skip a few.
The silver’s been polished, the crystal it gleams.
No more room for platters,
We’re bursting at the seams.
The day of the party dawned sunny and bright.
As always, I was nervous,
Would everything be alright?
The doorbell chimed merrily as guests did arrive
Soon champagne corks were popping
I might just survive!
Santa made an appearance, his grey beard suspicious.
He looked a bit like my hubby,
Though he’d never admit this.
We’d done it again, the party a success
A good time was had by all,
Who cares if the kitchen’s a mess.
We’ll host again next year, there’s really no doubt.
Our hard work was worth it,
Though my back did give out.
As guests gathered their belongings and began to take flight
To those fine folk we said
“A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
